The former Springbok star says Ireland cannot complain about the referee’s decision in the All Blacks’
defeat. Looking back at this weekend’s loss to New Zealand, it’s clear that Ireland will be disappointed with their performance in a number of areas of the game.
The squad’s problems were evident, especially in the first half. Andy Farrell’s side frequently relinquished possession of the ball and often failed to capitalize on dangerous positions.
The altercation is another cause for concern.
While Ireland have typically excelled in this area over the past two years, they were fined for a number of breaches in their loss to the All Blacks. Ultimately, this had a decisive influence on the outcome of the match.
The former Springboks star analyzes Ireland’s penalties against the All Blacks
Some felt that Ireland were treated harshly in this area by referee Wayne Bartnes, with Andrew Porter in particular being constantly criticized.
Speaking on the RTÉ Rugby podcast, former South Africa, Ulster and Munster prop BJ Botha said Ireland cannot complain about today’s decisions.
I looked at them and I believe they were (penalties).
[Andrew] Porter for me is an incredible player, but if you look at the weakest part of his game it would be the scrum. He showed it.
I watched the matches and he was very lucky against South Africa. [Ben] O’Keeffe went after him after the first game and told him you’ve got to put your elbow up. It was a clear penalty.
Chess pieces are essential in these cup matches. When this cycle occurs at scrum time, it is primarily determined by that first scrum; it sets the tone and we build momentum through it…
New Zealand has arrived and they know they can get them there. Once that momentum has been created, it is difficult for the referee to change the outcome of the match.
It takes a good referee to make big decisions. [Wayne] Barnes is one of the best guys on the scrum side and he’s made some good decisions.
Ireland will certainly look back on this match with much regret, with the penalties conceded in this area ultimately setting the stage for New Zealand to go on and win the match.
