Aston Villa expect the investigation into Nicolo Zaniolo’s alleged betting conduct to be completed in the coming weeks.
The 24-year-old joined the club on a season-long loan last summer and has swiftly established himself as an important member of Unai Emery’s side.

However, after returning early from international duty with Italy last week, the club said on Friday that he was aiding the competent authorities with their investigation into alleged betting activities.

Villa went on to say that the Italian international had been working with the first-team squad this week and is available for selection against West Ham United on Sunday, so the hope is that he will be cleared of any wrongdoing as quickly as possible so that the situation can be put behind him.

According to Matt Maher of The Express and Star, Zaniolo is set to meet with prosecutors in Turin in “the coming days,” while Villa expects the situation to be concluded in “a matter of weeks.”

It’s to be hoped that the advertised timeline holds true, because the sooner Zaniolo can move on from this, the better, as it will remove any off-the-field distractions and allow him to continue to play a crucial role in our pursuit for success this season.

Notably, he has yet to be accused or found guilty of any misconduct. According to the article, he discussed the problem with Monchi and stated that he did not put any bets on football, while his attorneys are reported to have indicated that he only played blackjack and poker online on sites that he was unaware were illegal at the time.

Hopefully, that will be proven in the continuing inquiry and he will not face any fines, but there will no doubt be a desire from all parties involved to get the subject addressed as soon as possible, regardless of whether or not Zaniolo can continue to play in the meantime.
