David Moyes makes astonishing new admission about West Ham transfer over Ollie Watkins after witnessing what could have happened in Aston Villa loss
David Moyes has made astonishing new admission West Ham’s Ollie Watkins transfer is surprising after seeing what could have happened in the loss to Aston Villa.
Ahead of West Ham’s trip to Aston Villa, Michail Antonio proudly talks about why and how he battled Gianluca Scamacca and Sebastien Haller to remain the club’s number one striker.
But as the game progressed, he did little to back it up, as his performance only proved that West Ham need to make signing Antonio’s heir a top priority.
The Hammers have been linked with a number of strikers this summer. And despite the failure of previous costly attempts to replace Antonio, it now looks like a mistake not to push the boat out to move forward in good faith.
Especially if West Ham are serious about challenging Aston Villa for European football.
If Antonio was terrible, Ollie Watkins on the other end of the line was great.
West Ham fans who follow the transfer window closely may remember that the Hammers were linked with Watkins before he signed for Villa and again when Steven Gerrard took charge.
It’s hard to know what to believe when spreading rumors.
But David Moyes has surprisingly made a new transfer bid for West Ham ahead of Watkins after seeing what could have been in Aston Villa’s defeat.
Speaking after the game, Moyes admitted he wanted to sign Watkins before he joined Villa.
Instead he could only watch as Antonio toiled while England man Watkins scored with the kind of striker play the Hammers are sorely lacking.
“Yeah, we did (make a move for Watkins) when he was at Brentford,” Moyes said in his post-match presser – as reported by Birmingham World.
“He scored a good goal today.”
That he did.
And while Antonio has been an excellent servant for West Ham – the thought of Watkins leading the line instead of him at the London Stadium is a mouthwatering one.
If only West Ham had done this deal before Villa. I think we’d rather the boss keep this to himself for our own sanity!
