Everton: Martyn Ziegler drops points deduction conclusion as £20m-a-month accusation made According to The Times reporter Martyn Ziegler, Everton require roughly £20 million per month to keep the club running.

The Toffees are waiting for approval from the Premier League, the Football Association, and the Financial Conduct Authority to proceed with their takeover of the club.

Since completing an agreement with Farhad Moshiri to purchase his whole 94.1% stake in the club, the Miami-based corporation has already given the Toffees millions [The Guardian].

Ziegler discussed the investment further on the Sport Unlocked podcast [29 October, 37m 8s] and expressed his opinion on the probable 12-point deduction Everton may suffer if they are found guilty of violating FFP restrictions.

“There are issues, I’m sure, for the Premier League whether this takeover can go ahead,” he was quoted as saying.

“It’s a huge challenge – around £20 million per month is required to keep things running.” The more pressing question is how they came to be in this position. Moshiri has effectively thrown money into them through sponsorship arrangements.

“I believe the Premier League has a similar policy [to the EFL].” We don’t know for sure what the Premier League’s team would have advised, but I’d be amazed if it’s as high as a 12-point maximum penalty.”

Trouble

These Ziegler comments highlight what Everton fans already knew: the club is in big jeopardy if this takeover does not go through.

Even so, if the unfavorable press stories about 777 are any indication, it may be a matter of better the devil you know.

But, ultimately, something must be done if Everton is to – and this is not hyperbole – simply survive the next decade or so.

The second point raised by Ziegler, involving point deduction, is consistent with the common agreement.

The allegations of a possible 12-point deduction last week were undoubtedly shocking, but that is very much the worst-case scenario.

Furthermore, Everton must first be found guilty of rule violations, and we don’t even know if that will happen at this moment.

In any case, the FFP case and the 777 Partners takeover will undoubtedly provide for an interesting couple of months away from the field.

In other Everton news, a Toffees regular is apparently being pursued by a number of European clubs.
