E.J. Warner is back for Monday morning practice at Temple

Sophomore quarterback returns to Owls after missing two games in concussion protocol

Sophomore quarterback E.J. Warner was back at work with the Temple football team on Monday morning, practicing with his teammates after missing their last two games with concussion symptoms. The Owls will host Navy at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday.

Warner was sidelined following Temple’s 49-34 homecoming loss to UTSA on Sept. 7. Coach Stan Drayton said Warner didn’t report any concussion symptoms during or after the game, but wasn’t feeling well when he woke up the next morning.

In Warner’s absence, the Owls suffered a 45-14 loss at North Texas and a 55-0 loss to SMU. After scoring on two of their first three drives at North Texas, the offense went scoreless on 21 consecutive drives across those two games.

Senior quarterback Quincy Patterson stepped in for Warner and played the entire game at North Texas and the first half against SMU before being replaced by sophomore Forrest Brock. The Owls has one drive halted inside the 10-yard line and missed a field goal against SMU.

Warner had his best game of the season against UTSA, completing 42 of 65 passes for 472 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions. So far this year, he’s completed 153 of 271 passes for 1,741 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions. In six games, Warner was sacked five times. In the past two games, Patterson and Brock were sacked a total of eight times.

The Owls have lost five straight games and are 2-6 overall, 0-4 in American Conference play, heading into Saturday’s game against Navy. The Midshipmen are 3-4 overall, 2-2 in AAC play. Saturday’s game will kickoff at 2 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN+.
