Knights’ departure marked half of the next contract.
He signed with a new club.
Huddersfield Giants have confirmed the signing of former Newcastle Knights and St George Illawarra Dragons defender Adam Clune.
Clune, who had to wait a long time to be considered for NRL duty, has become a vital part of the Knights squad, where he has acted as back-up to Jackson Hastings and Tyson Gamble for much of the period.
time of the 2023 campaign, unable to compete until round 25.
It’s been a campaign in which the Knights have had a superb final two-and-a-half months, winning nine games in a row to reach the finals end, with Clune playing a bit while Jackson Hastings remains sidelined.
.
Although he spent most of the year in the reserves, his talent was recognized when he took out the NSW Cup Club Player of the Year.
Clune’s final match in a Knights shirt was the semi-final in Auckland, where he gave a strong account of himself despite the final scoreline as the Warriors progressed to the preliminary final, where they were themselves—they were even beaten by the Brisbane Broncos the following week.
Instead of staying in the NRL, Clune will head to England, where the 28-year-old has signed a two-year contract that will keep him at Huddersfield until at least the end of the 2025 season.
Clune, who is known for his football plays, will have to battle with Tuimoala Lolohea, Jake Connor, Olly Russell, and Kieran Rush for a place among Huddersfield’s top 17 players, but is likely to win a place to wear the half-back shirt.
Clune said he was “delighted” to join the Giants, who have had a miserable 2023 campaign, finishing ninth in the standings with 11 wins from 27 games.
“I’m really excited to be joining the Giants.
My partner and I are looking forward to the next chapter of our lives in the UK.
It looks like a very strong team, so I can’t wait to get there and join the playing group and staff and start working towards a successful 2024 season,” Clune said.
Similar to the NRL, you have to prepare for a tough game every week.
Anyone can beat anyone on their day in Super League, which is exciting for the game and I’m looking forward to being part of a team that competes in every game.
I’m very excited to play in front of the fans.
I have a few friends who play in Super League and they all say the atmosphere created by the fans there is unreal, so it’s something I’m really looking forward to.
“Whenever I sign for a team, the manager is always an important consideration.
I had a few discussions with Watto [coach Ian Watson] before signing and he really the idea of being part of a group of players and a club team that excited me.
As a full-back, I think having a good relationship with the coach is really important, so I’m really excited to work with Watto in the future.
“In terms of how I play, my aim is to do my job as a full-back by moving the team around the park, communicating very well, having a good playing style, creating time as well as space for the players around me and staying competitive.
I look forward to being part of a Giants team that plays entertaining but tough football.
Clune leaves the NRL with 47 appearances; that’s 22 for the Knights and 25 for the Dragons since their 2020 debut.
