Sad news for Texas Rangers

Texas Rangers Pass on Mitch Garver Qualifying Offer as Free Agency Opens

The Texas Rangers did not tender a qualifying offer to Mitch Garver, allowing the veteran to hit free agency for the first time.

The Texas Rangers did not make the qualifying offer to Mitch Garver, which allows the catcher/designated hitter to enter free agency without the club receiving any draft compensation if he signs with another team.

The World Series champions had to make the offer by Monday. With this year’s figure being a bit more than $20 million, the Rangers also ran the risk of Garver accepting the offer for a one-year contract rather than hitting free agency.

The Rangers can still re-sign Garver, but he is likely to be at the top of the catcher free-agent market and command a multi-year deal. The Rangers are set at catcher with Jonah Heim, who is entering his first arbitration season. Texas also has Sam Huff as Heim’s potential backup next season.
