Astros announce 8 promotions in baseball ops dept
Gavin Dickey named assistant general manager
The Houston Astros promoted several members of their baseball operations staff on Thursday, according to Astros General Manager Dana Brown.
Gavin Dickey was promoted to Assistant General Manager, Will Sharp was promoted to Special Assistant to General Manager, Jacob Buffa was promoted to Senior Director, Player Development and performance Science, J.J. Ruby was promoted to Senior Director, Research and development, Anthony Cacchione was promoted to Director, Baseball Operations, Cam Pendino was promoted to Director, Player Evaluation, Aaron DelGiudice was promoted to Assistant Director, Player Personnel, and Rafael Soto was promoted to Manager, Minor League Operations.
Dickey, along with Andrew Ball and Charles Cook, will report to Brown as one of three Assistant General Managers.
Dickey worked as a Special Assistant to the General Manager during the 2023 season. Dickey, who was hired as an area scout by the Astros in 2011, has worked for the team in a variety of capacities, including regional crosschecker, national crosschecker, and special assignment scout. His 13th season with the Astros will begin in 2024. Dickey spent six seasons in the minor leagues as an outfielder before joining the Astros.
Sharp has served as a Special Advisor to Baseball Operations for the past two seasons. He joined the Astros organization in December 2012 as a professional scout and has since handled positions such as Analyst, Pro Scouting, and Manager, Major League Strategy. His 12th season with the Astros will begin in 2024.
Buffa previously served as the Astros’ Director of Performance Science and will now be responsible for Player Development. Ruby joined the Astros on a full-time basis in October 2022, having previously served as Lead Innovator.
