Ohio State legend Maurice Clarett implores Texas QB Arch Manning to transfer to Buckeyes
After Arch Manning’s debut and Ohio State’s loss to Michigan, the former Buckeye running back shot his shot.
Texas five-star freshman quarterback Arch Manning made his college debut Friday night against Texas Tech, leading a touchdown drive in the Longhorns’ 57-7 victory over Texas Tech. And with Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers’ reported uncertainty about whether to return to school or enter the NFL Draft — and in the aftermath of Ohio State’s 30-24 loss to Michigan — former Buckeyes star Maurice Clarett suggested that Manning should transfer to Ohio State.
“Come on Dawg…. Get in that transfer portal,” Clarett posted to social media. “We will have your whole life turnt up. I know your whole family paid but ain’t nothing like being a star at an elite school. Quinn Ewers ain’t going nowhere soon. @peytonmanning @archmanning think about it big dawg.”
Ohio State’s own quarterback, Kyle McCord, could have multiple years of eligibility remaining if he chooses to leave Columbus. And McCord has thrown for 3,170 yards and 24 touchdowns with six interceptions in his first season as a starter.
But much like coaches, Ohio State players are judged on how they play against Michigan, and while he passed for 271 yards and two touchdowns against the Wolverines, McCord also threw two interceptions, including the game-sealing pick.
The top-ranked player in the 2023 class, Manning preserved his redshirt at Texas this year. But to the delight of Longhorn fans, Manning entered the Texas Tech game after Ewers and Co. sealed the result, with Manning completing 2-of-5 passes for 30 yards and rushing three times for seven yards. His second drive saw Manning help Texas to a touchdown, with Manning converting fourth-and-5 near midfield by connecting with Casey Cain on a 13-yard completion. Three plays later, Tre Wisner drove in for a score.
Ewers entered this season as a returning starter and projected first-round pick, himself the former top-ranked player in his respective recruiting class. And interestingly enough, considering Clarett’s request, Ewers transferred to Texas from Ohio State after a season where Ewers redshirted and didn’t play. He played in 10 games last year, then logged 10 games this season as well, completing almost 70% of his passes for 2,709 yards and 17 touchdowns with five interceptions.
And while many figured the transition from Ewers to Manning would go smoothly, backup Maalik Murphy has had his moments, and Ewers admitted that he wasn’t sure about leaving school after this season.
