Former Rockets player dead after SWAT standoff

A former Houston Rockets guard was found dead in a Los Angeles home early Saturday, a few hours after police said he exchanged fire with officers.

Tyler Honeycutt, 27, who played for the Rockets and UCLA, was identified by family members, according to a Los Angeles ABC outlet.

The Los Angeles Police Department said he appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Honeycutt was a standout guard for two seasons at UCLA before he was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in 2011.

He was traded to the Rockets in 2013, and was soon after waived by the team. Most recently, Honeycutt was playing for a team overseas.

The Los Angeles Police Department said they were called around 5 p.m. to a home in which Honeycutt had barricaded himself.

LAPD said on Twitter that they then “made contact” with him, after which he traded shots with officers.

An LAPD SWAT team entered the home around 4 a.m., finding Honeycutt dead, the department said on Twitter.
