Former New York Giants player dies at age 40

Offensive lineman Shane Olivea, who played for the New York Giants in 2008, has died. He was 40.

No cause of death was given for the Cedarhurst, N.Y., native.

Roman Oben, a former teammate of Olivea and the NFL vice president of football development, reported the news on social media.

Olivea, a 6-foot-4, 312-pounder who played his college ball at Ohio State, was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the seventh round of the 2004 NFL Draft. He spent four seasons with San Diego and helped pave the way for Charger running back LaDainian Tomlinson’s NFL’s single-season touchdown record in 2006.

A back injury ended his time with the Giants. He tried attempt a comeback in the UFL a couple of years later and he played with Florida Tuskers (later named the Virginia Destroyers) in 2010. He retired after the 2011 UFL season.

Johnie Cooks, Giants Super Bowl winner, dead at 64

Johnie Cooks, a linebacker who starred at Mississippi State before going on to a 10-year NFL career, died on Thursday.

He was 64.

“When you think of Mississippi State Football, you think of legends like Johnie Cooks,” Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett wrote on Twitter. “The Bulldog Family lost an all-time great today. On behalf of our program, we extend our condolences to the Cooks family.”
