Tank Dell Injury Update: Standout Texans Rookie WR To Undergo Season-Ending Surgery
The Texans-Broncos Week 13 contest has major implications in the AFC South. However, Houston may have to navigate the rest of the divisional matchup without one of its offensive stars.
Rookie wide receiver Tank Dell hurt his ankle in the first quarter of Sunday’s game on a goal line play.
The Texans have ruled him out for the rest of the game against the Broncos. Entering the game against the Broncos, Dell had 47 receptions for 709 yards and a team-high seven touchdowns.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that Dell suffered a fractured fibula and will be placed on IR.
Texans WR Tank Dell, whose breakout performance this season has sparked his team’s offense, suffered a fractured fibula, source said.
Dell was hurt on a Dameon Pierce two-yard touchdown run with 3:49 remaining in the first quarter.
As the Texans running back barreled into the end zone, Dell appeared to have his leg rolled up on.
He remained on the ground after the play and was treated by the training staff in the end zone before eventually he was carted off the field.
The Texans are in for the TD, but Tank Dell is down after the play.
Tank Dell with what looks like a tough leg injury was questionable heading into the Week 13 contest with a calf injury but was cleared to play Sunday morning.
The Texans were already entering the game against the Broncos shorthanded on offense, with tight end Dalton Schultz inactive with a hamstring injury.
With Dell unable to return, expect Stroud to get more targets to Nico Collins, Noah Brown and Robert Woods.
Tank Dell has been a revelation for the Houston Texans as a rookie.
After a week of fighting to be ready to play against the Denver Broncos, he was injured on a Dameon Pierce touchdown run.
Seeing the cart is never a good thing, but the Texans’ X (formerly Twitter) account quickly reported that Dell was questionable to return with an ankle injury.
One thing about Tank is he’s very unselfish, and to see him go out, the game of football is tough, man. It’s tough,” Stroud said.
Fantasy football managers who have been reaping the benefits of Dell’s recent breakout fantasy performances could be holding their breath after the rookie wideout appeared to pick up an injury in the first quarter of their game against the Broncos.
Dell entered the game with four straight double-digit fantasy performances and could be a huge loss for Stroud.
Dell entered Sunday’s game with 47 receptions for 709 yards and seven TDs, which could present an instant opportunity for Collins and Brown to see an expanded role in this passing attack if Dell misses any time in the coming weeks.
Dell got rolled up on at the end of a 3-yard touchdown run by Dameon Pierce that put Houston ahead 10-0 with about four minutes left in the first quarter.
Coach DeMeco Ryans came onto the field and talked to Dell before the receiver was helped onto a cart while unable to put any weight on his left leg.
Dell, a third-round pick from the University of Houston, entered the game as the third rookie in NFL history with at least five catches and a TD reception in four straight games.
Entering Sunday, he had at least 100 yards receiving in two of his past three home games, highlighted by a career-best 149-yard performance two weeks ago.
Ryans didn’t discuss Dell’s condition after the game but said losing him early against the Broncos was a major blow.
“It really hurt us losing Tank,”
Ryans said.
Quarterback C. Stroud, who led the team in prayer before Dell was taken off the field, became emotional when asked about the injury.
“The game of football is tough,”
Stroud said.
“I love my brother to death, and I am praying for him, and I am here for him no matter what,”
Stroud said.
The Houston Texans won’t have wideout Tank Dell for the rest of Week 13. Dell, who suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter, has been officially ruled out for the game with an ankle injury.
Dell left the game with 3:53 to go in the first quarter after he rolled his ankle on the Dameon Pierce rushing touchdown. Dell had not registered a catch when he left the game.
Without Dell, the Texans will lean on wideouts Nico Collins, John Metchie III and Noah Brown, who missed the past two games with a knee injury.
