The Royals open up a spot on the 40-man roster for the Rule 5 draft.

The Royals have traded reliever Dylan Coleman to the Houston Astros, according to reporter Anne Rogers. The move opens up a 40-man roster spot, allowing the Royals to make a selection in the Rule 5 draft. In return, the Royals receive pitcher Carlos Mateo, a 19-year-old pitcher who spent last year in the Florida Complex League.

The 27-year-old Coleman had spent parts of three seasons with the Royals, with a 3.88 ERA in 92 ¹⁄₃ innings. He had an electric fastball and a sweeping slider, but had a lot of trouble throwing strikes. In 18 1/3 innings with the Royals this year, he had an 8.84 ERA with 19 walks. His troubles continued in the minors, where he walked 32 hitters in 30 2/3 innings, although with 48 strikeouts.

The Royals originally acquired Coleman after the 2020 season from the Padres as the player to be named later in the Trevor Rosenthal deal that sent Edward Olivares to the Royals.
