Billy Bowman Jr. returning to Oklahoma for senior season
Oklahoma starting safety Billy Bowman Jr. will be back for his senior season in the SEC.
One of the nation’s top safeties will return to Oklahoma for one more season.
Billy Bowman Jr., who led the nation in interceptions returned for a touchdown this fall, announced Friday night his plans to return to Norman for his senior season, providing the Sooners with a crucial boost on the back of their defense heading into the program’s inaugural SEC season.
A former four-star prospect in the 2021 class who was rated as a top-50 player in the country coming out of Ryan High in Denton, Texas, Bowman has become a staple in Oklahoma’s secondary during his career.
Along with his six interceptions and three touchdowns, Bowman recorded 61 total tackles this season, with three for a loss. He also added four pass breakups while posting an overall coverage grade of 71.8 on the year, according to Pro Football Focus. Bowman was one of four Oklahoma players to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors this season, as voted on by the league’s coaches.
His decision to return to OU for a fourth season solidifies the back end of the Sooners’ defense, even as the secondary will be tasked with replacing safeties Reggie Pearson Jr., who has exhausted his eligibility, and Key Lawrence, who hit the transfer portal Monday as a graduate transfer. Along with Bowman returning to shore up the free safety spot in Oklahoma’s secondary, the Sooners are also set to return Robert Spears-Jennings, who made two starts at strong safety this season, and freshman standout Peyton Bowen.
