Big problem: Rangers key player suffers a season ending injury

BBC pundit details Rangers ‘problems’ as at least two players now ruled out for ‘huge’ match

Rangers have “problems” ahead of their games against Real Betis and Aberdeen following the Jose Cifuentes suspension and Nico Raskin injury, according to Neil McCann.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene on Saturday (9 December), the pundit said the Europa League clash on Thursday (14 December) is “huge” for the club as they aim to secure their place in the knockout rounds of the competition.

He added that it could be a “really tough” week for the Gers as they also prepare to face Aberdeen in the Viaplay Cup final on 17 December, with Raskin out and fellow midfielder Cifuentes set to miss the game after being sent off against Dundee on Saturday (9 December).

Asked for his thoughts on the upcoming matches, McCann said: “Huge. They should’ve done their business against Limassol, they were booed off the pitch. Welcome to Scotland for Philippe Clement about the pressure and expectancy of a club like Rangers.

“It’s going to be a tough game out there, already done the business against the side and then the League Cup final. Maybe Cifuentes might miss that. With Raskin out, they’ve got a few problems and the games keep coming. And big games it is as well, so a really tough week coming and I hope a positive one for them.”

Season-defining week

In many ways, this is set to be a season-defining week for Rangers as they simply can’t afford to lose either of their upcoming two matches.

While there is less pressure on the game against Betis because they have at least secured a place in the Europa Conference League after Christmas, the financial rewards of remaining in the Europa League could be greater.

The Gers players should be confident they can take all three points against the Seville-based side after already seeing them off once this season.

The bigger game will certainly come against Aberdeen, though, as Philippe Clement knows that this is the one he absolutely must win.

The Light Blues haven’t won the Viaplay Cup since 2011, meaning the thought of not taking the trophy back to Ibrox after reaching this stage is inconceivable.

In other Rangers news, Clement has made an exit decision on one player ahead of the January transfer window.
