News: Iowa wide receiver Diante Vines has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, sources told 247Sports. Vines is the first Iowa wide receiver to enter the portal for the Hawkeyes this offseason.

Vines was a promising addition to the Iowa staff in the 2020 recruiting cycle out of Connecticut. Vines showed much promise throughout his career at Iowa, but injuries hindered his progress, and he could never stay healthy consistently.

In 2023, Vines had 12 catches for 134 yards and a touchdown.

What it means: Iowa will lose two of its top receivers from this year’s team with Vines entering the portal and Nico Ragaini out of eligibility. The Hawkeyes’ top two returning wide receivers next fall will be Kaleb Brown and Seth Anderson. That said, the Hawkeyes will likely have to go to the transfer portal to find another wide receiver or two to bolster up the room and increase the depth at the top. Brown and Anderson are a capable one-two punch, but the Hawkeyes need more experience at that position. There are a handful of promising underclassmen in the room such as Jacob BostickDayton Howard, and Jarriett Buie, but their experience is minimal, and Iowa should be looking to add more proven pieces to Kelton Copeland’s room via the transfer portal.

More on the transfer portal: While a player entering their name in the transfer portal means they intend to explore their options, it does not necessarily mean they will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.

There were 3,083 FBS players to enter the transfer portal during the 2021-22 transfer cycle, sources said. That is up from 2,646 in 2021-20, 1,692 in 2019-20 and 1,717 in 2018-19. That increase can at least partially be credited to the NCAA’s new policy that student-athletes are allowed to transfer once in their careers without having to sit out a year-in-residence. That means all players who enter the transfer portal for the first time will be immediately eligible at their new school as long as they meet a NCAA-mandated entry deadline.
