SAD NEWS: Nebraska Cornhuskers Football lost a CB to the transfer porter

Transfer portal: Nebraska hosting FCS DB, former blue-chip lineman leaves OU, Big Ten notes

Nebraska football will host a FCS transfer cornerback this weekend, according to his social media accounts.

St. Francis (Pa.) University freshman defender Blye Hill plans to visit NU Dec. 15 and 16. Hill had 21 tackles, two interceptions and six pass breakups for St. Francis, a school of 2,212 that finished 4-6 in 2023. Located in tiny Loretto, halfway between Altoona and Johnstown, St. Francis competes in the Northeast Conference.

Hill played for Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, where he had 22 pass breakups and two interceptions over two seasons.

The 6-foot-3, 165-pounder could vie for playing time if he’s a match with the Huskers.

Nebraska returns two starting corners – Malcolm Hartzog and Tommi Hill – for 2024, but defensive backs coach Evan Cooper will be looking for depth from Dwight Bootle, Ethan Nation and Syncere Safeeullah. NU experimented with 2023 receiver signees D’Andre Barnes and Brice Turner at corner, too. Incoming 2024 recruits Mario Buford and Evan Taylor are slated for corner, too, although Taylor tore his ACL at the beginning of his senior year.

Quinton Newsome and Omar Brown exhausted their eligibility while Javier Morton and Tamon Lynum entered the transfer portal. NU appears in good shape at safety following Isaac Gifford’s Monday night announcement that he’d return for a fifth year.

Offensive line depth may preclude portal need

Nebraska’s annual pursuit of transfer offensive linemen may end in the 2024 portal cycle. But, if NU wanted to kick the tires on one, a top 2023 recruiting cycle target entered the portal Tuesday, according to On3.

Cayden Green, a former Top 100 prospect, intends to leave Oklahoma despite starting as a true freshman. In the summer of 2022, the 6-foot-5, 316-pounder from Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North High School took one of his five official visits to Nebraska, which had at the time just hired offensive line coach Donovan Raiola. LSU, Michigan, Missouri and the Sooners also got visits before Green committed to OU July 8, 2022.

Green played guard at Oklahoma. Originally scouts saw him as a tackle prospect, too.
