Tennessee and the NCAA transfer portal: Tracking all of the departures and additions for the Vols

The NCAA transfer portal has been open for a little more than two weeks now, and there has been plenty of movement already for Tennessee this month. The doors of the portal have swung both ways for the Vols as they continue to shape their roster for the 2024 season, and so far there have been nine scholarship players depart the program with Tennessee’s coaching staff addressing needs with three transfer additions, all of whom were announced during the first day of the Early Signing Period on Wednesday. With the flurry of activity it can be hard to remember who is leaving and who is coming in, but GoVols247 is here to help track all of the departures and additions.

Cornerback Warren Burrell

- 2023 stats: Eight tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception and one fumble recovery in 10 games
- Height/weight: 6-0/190

- Eligibility remaining: One season
- New program: Georgia Tech (Committed December 10)
Tennessee’s first portal entry, Burrell is a graduate transfer who will play his final season of eligibility closer to him for the Yellow Jackets of the ACC. He played the past five seasons at Tennessee and started 22 of his first 31 career games with the Vols before a season-ending shoulder injury late in last season’s overtime win at Pittsburgh became the turning point of his time on Rocky Top. After starting the first four games of his freshman season in 2019 and the final four of his sophomore season in 2020, Burrell started all 12 games he played in 2021 and had 41 tackles, two tackles for loss and seven pass breakups for Tennessee’s then-new coaching staff, and he had 12 tackles for loss and one PBU in two games in 2022 before the injury.
Burrell returned to health this season, but was primarily a reserve, totaling eight tackles, one tackle for loss, one interception (against UTSA) and one fumble recovery (a muffed punt against Austin Peay) in 10 games, playing 166 snaps on defense.
