But the Detroit Lions? No disrespect, but Aaron Glenn is not one of the first names that springs to mind when thinking about top defensive coordinators nowadays.

But that’s not how his teammates on the Detroit Lions see it.

Glenn is currently recognized as the best defensive coordinator in the NFL Players Association survey, which was conducted with input from more than 750 active defensive players.

Glenn has taken over the Lions’ defense, which finished last the season allowing opponents to average 32.4 points per game, and turned it around. After Glenn took over, the Lions saw a minor improvement, allowing 27.5 points per game and placing 31st in terms of points allowed. The Lions placed 28th the next season while giving up 25.1 points per game.

  1. In his third year in charge of Detroit’s defense, Glenn has the Lions giving up 23.4 points per game, good for 23rd in the NFL. While he is undoubtedly an upgrade, the coordinators managing the top-20 units are all on the top-five list below him.
