Breaking news: Husker agreed £150 million deal with……
With the announcement of former Oregon running back Dante Dowdell’s commitment to the Huskers, Nebraska added a crucial component through the transfer portal.
As a freshman at Oregon, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound running back played in six games and finished with 17 carries for 90 yards, the most of which came in the first game when he had eight totes for 55 yards and his lone touchdown. The running back fought for snaps in a skilled but crowded running back room during his debut season in Eugene, though he did see three carries in his last game before being benched.
Lincoln will present opportunities for Dowdell, even though veterans are returning to Nebraska. Freshman Kwinten Ives redshirted the previous season, and Rahmir Johnson and Gabe Ervin Jr. are both making a comeback from injuries that ended their seasons. Emmett Johnson, a prospective sophomore, is Nebraska’s top returning rusher with 90 rushes for 411 yards and two touchdowns.
In December, Nebraska’s head coach Matt Rhule declared that his team would go after the right running back in the portal.
Running backs should want to come here and play, Rhule said. “We always look and talk to some other guys, but the big thing is with next year’s class is that you talk about ‘hey what positions are you gonna target as a staff'” “We ran the ball well this year and kind of revamped our playbook, so we’ll go find a tailback that can really help us in the next class, but if one comes along before then, let’s do it.”
Adding Dowdell to Nebraska completes another significant addition during the quiet transfer portal offseason. On Friday night, the Huskers also added Isaiah Neyor, a former wide receiver for Texas and Wyoming. Earlier this week, Neyor paid a visit to Nebraska.
Dowdell had an overall rating of 90 and was rated as a four-star transfer by 247Sports. That ranked Dowdell as the No. 11 running back and No. 114 overall athlete on the portal.
According to 247Sports, Dowdell was a four-star prospect and the nation’s ninth-best running back in the 2023 recruiting class.
Nash Hutmacher, a defensive tackle for Nebraska, hadn’t touched a wrestling mat in a few years, but he erased any rust in his first collegiate fight on Saturday against Wyoming.
In the opening frame of their heavyweight battle at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, Hutmacher submitted Mason Ding of Wyoming in front of a sizable audience of Nebraska football players and coaches.
Prior to the dead period, Dowdell also visited Mississippi State; but, he visited Lincoln this past weekend and was pleased with what he observed. The running back visited Memorial Stadium and posed for photos with Dylan Raiola, a five-star quarterback signee.
Dowdell declared his support for the Huskers on social media prior to his official visit to Nebraska on Friday.
With 52 seconds remaining in the first round, Hutmacher had already taken the lead in his bout with Ding after flipping the heavyweight from Wyoming onto his back and pinning him.
