Disagreement between the both team as Detroit…….

In and Out of Zach Ertz Signing with the Lions

In their regular season finale, the Detroit Lions lost Pro Bowl tight end Sam LaPorta, a vital component of their offense.

LaPorta allegedly had a bone bruise and hyperextended knee during the Minnesota Vikings’ 30-20 victory. Even if the initial prognosis isn’t as serious as many had feared, the rookie will probably miss Detroit’s first round playoff matchup against Los Angeles on Sunday.
LaPorta is a key component of Detroit’s attack, so the Lions’ passing game will be lacking something. In addition, with the rookie sidelined and backup Brock Wright questionable after missing the previous three games due to a hip ailment, there is a lack of depth at the position.
Thus, the Lions would be prudent to assess outside candidates who might be able to provide a last-minute boost to their offensive. Zach Ertz, a three-time Pro Bowl selection who was cut by Arizona in late November, is one of those available.
After registering 27 receptions for 187 yards and one touchdown this season with the Cardinals, Ertz was dismissed. His combination of proven output and seasoned expertise may be just what the Lions need as they head into the postseason, as he has yet to sign with a new team.
Over the course of 12 seasons, Ertz has amassed 7,434 yards and 46 touchdowns. He spent nine years as a player for the Eagles, making three trips to the Pro Bowl and contributing to the team’s Super Bowl 52 victory.

To replace the vacuum left by LaPorta, the Lions may potentially look within. Having been on the practice squad for the most of the season, Anthony Firkser is a well-known face. Wright’s return on Sunday would be critical to Detroit’s depth.

He has appeared in two games and was waived last week in order to make room on the roster for two returning defenders. Last week, he was added back to the practice squad.
Another veteran option, Darrell Daniels, was dismissed after appearing in three games for the Lions earlier this season. Daniels’ main responsibility, though, was to cover for Jason Cabinda at fullback in the wake of his injury.
Since Ertz is ready to start playing right away, adding him to the practice squad would be wise. Since it is still unknown how long LaPorta will be out of the picture, Detroit cannot afford to wait on a deal.
