The Boston Celtics were active in the trade market before of the NBA draft in 2023. The Celtics acquired Kristaps Porzingis in a three-team trade with the Washington Wizards and Memphis Grizzlies.
Boston sent Marcus Smart to the Grizzlies in exchange for Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala, and the Wizards’ 35th overall pick. The Grizzlies also traded the Celtics the No. 25 pick and a 2024 first-round pick from the Golden State Warriors.
Porzingis has to opt out of his $36 million deal for next season to facilitate the transaction. He will be Boston’s highest-paid player, but Washington also acquired Tyus Jones from Memphis.
The Boston Celtics had an active roster cap of $166,052,026 prior to the Kristaps Porzingis deal.
They are far in excess of the $136 million salary cap planned for the 2023-24 NBA season. They were also on track to exceed the $165 million luxury tax threshold, resulting in a luxury tax penalty of more than $1.7 million next season.
Kristaps Porzingis will earn $36 million as the Boston Celtics’ highest-paid player next season.

Boston must decide whether to re-sign Grant Williams, who will be a restricted free agency this summer. The Celtics’ acquisition of Porzingis may have cemented his destiny, as Al Horford will likely come off the bench and take over his job.
This summer, Jaylen Brown is also eligible to sign a supermax contract. In their six seasons together, Brown and Tatum have led Boston to four Eastern Conference Finals and one NBA Finals trip.
The Boston Celtics were defeated in the NBA playoffs by the Miami Heat. The Celtics rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the Eastern Conference Finals to force Game 7. They did, however, lose that game at home and thus failed to reach back-to-back NBA Finals.
Nevertheless, it was not a poor rookie season for coach Joe Mazzulla, who was elevated tothe position after Ime Udoka’s suspension and subsequent dismissal. With the Kristaps Porzingis deal, it appears that the Celtics’ front office is molding their roster to what Mazzulla likes.
