If Jerry Jones wants to go ‘all-in’ in 2024 here are some possible targets for the Cowboys
Dreaming never hurts, so why not aim high? With Jerry Jones declaring that he is going “all-in” in 2024, at least we now have a reason to dream big.
The offseasons for the are typically dull and uneventful. Given that they’re expected to extend contracts for Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and maybe Micah Parsons as well, money will still be tight this year. That will require a significant revision to their salary cap.
The Cowboys haven’t participated as much in the first round of free agency, when the majority of the spending occurs. They frequently sign a few “bargain bin” free agents, but they haven’t added a big-name player to their roster in a while.
However, after Jerry Jones recently discussed going “all-in,” we made the decision to examine a few “big name” free agents that he might target with his new approach. Although it is highly unlikely that the Cowboys would be interested in any of these players, there may be a slim chance that Dallas will join in the fun this season. Based on the “needs” of the Cowboys’ current roster, the following is a list of notable free agents.
PFF gave Jaylon Johnson an overall score of 90.8 and a coverage grade of 91.0. With four interceptions, he also tied for fifth place in the league. The best CB trio in the league could be formed by pairing him with DaRon Bland and DaRon Bland who would shut down Dallas’ secondary.
If the Cowboys were to pair Chris Jones with Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence, they would have the greatest pass-rushing tandem in the entire NFL. With 26 QB sacks in just the last two seasons, Jones’ versatility to line up all over the defensive front would elevate Dallas’ defense to a new level.
One of the top NFL pass-rushing off-ball linebackers, Frankie Luvu has 9.5 sacks, which ranks first, and 43 pressures since 2022, which ranks fourth at his position. In addition, he has accumulated 62 stops against the run, ranking 12th during that time. Although his coverage skills are limited, he is a powerful downhill player, and Dallas needs that at linebacker.
Before settling in as the Dolphins’ right guard, Robert Hunt began his career playing both tackle positions. With the Cowboys, he would have to switch to left guard, but the 6’6″, 335-pound player is a fantastic fit for a zone blocking scheme, and he would dominate the left side of Dallas’ offensive line if he were paired with Tyler Smith at left tackle.
The Cowboys’ best option if they’re looking to add offensive line support via free agency is probably to run it back with Tyler Biadasz. At his position, he is just as good as any other free agent option, and he also has the advantage of being acquainted with the playbook, coaches, and roster.
Tyron Smith remains one of the best left tackles in the league and available in free agency when healthy. The only other option available to Dallas besides drafting a replacement is to re-sign him, though that would entail some growing pains. Tyler Smith could remain at LG as a result of this as well.
If he stays in 2024, Brandin Cooks will only have one more year left, and Michael Gallup could be another casualty of the salary cap. Dallas might be looking for a free agent wide receiver as a result, and Mike Evans would be a perfect fit. In his ten-year career, he has reached the 1,000-yard receiving mark every season and is coming off a 13-TD season. He and CeeDee Lamb would make the ideal couple.
The former RB for the New York Giants would be a fantastic fit as the new RB1 for the Cowboys. In addition to his prior experience in the NFC East, his ability to produce as a receiver and runner on his own would be a huge asset to Dallas’ backfield.
