Contracts Commanders Must Consider Cutting in 2024 Offseason
There’s a chance that the Washington Commanders have a revolutionary offseason.
As of Wednesday morning, Washington was still in the process of selecting a head coach; however, in order to improve the roster, some personnel changes need to be made.
In addition to improving the skill position players surrounding Sam Howell or a player selected with the second overall pick in 2024, the Commanders must address an offensive line that gave up 65 sacks in 2023.

Over his four years in Washington, Logan Thomas has not produced totals that are commensurate with his contract.
Thomas, who will earn the sixth-highest salary of any player on the Commanders roster in 2024, has only had one season with 500 or more receiving yards and has experienced injury setbacks.
After leading the Washington football team in receptions yards and touchdowns in 2020 with 670, Thomas has not nearly equaled that output in subsequent games.
It could be argued that having a veteran tight end like Thomas around for the 2024 season would aid in the development of any quarterback; however, given his recent performance, his contract is too costly for him to play either the No. 1 tight end role or that role.
If Thomas is released before the $8.2 million final year of his three-year contract, his contract will only cost $1.75 million in dead cap money.
In order to give the 2024 starting quarterback a few youthful options in addition to Terry McLaurin as the top pass-catcher, Washington may decide to acquire younger tight ends.
Regardless of who takes the starting center position in September, the offensive line in Washington needs to be reorganized.
In 2023, the Commanders permitted Howell to be fired 65 times.
A comparable total in 2024 would limit Howell’s growth or that of the new quarterback the team signs.
Out of the three offensive linemen scheduled to make over $5 million next season for the Commanders, Nick Gates is one.
With a $5.2 million cap hit, Gates’ deal is easier to get out of than the ones Charles Leno and Andrew Wylie signed. It is also less expensive.
Although Washington might prefer to avoid rebuilding everywhere and retain the majority of its experienced offensive linemen, a change might be necessary to prevent another concession of more than sixty sacks.
Dyami Brown
One potential casualty of the new coaching staff could be Dyami Brown.
Mostly utilized on special teams, the fourth-year wide receiver has not amassed more than 200 receiving yards in any of his three NFL seasons.
In order to improve at wide receiver, the Commanders may decide to cut Brown from his $1.5 million contract.
Jahan Dotson ought to remain in the team’s plans, but McLaurin is unquestionably the best pass-catcher.
