Hull FC legend Jamie Shaul has no regrets after quitting sport to become bricklayer again
Jamie Shaul earned hero status scoring the match-winning try in Hull’s first-ever Wembley victory in 2016, one of 200 games for his hometown club, but quit sport to become a bricklayer again
Jamie Shaul made no secret of his desire to return to bricklaying after retiring from rugby league. After all, the former Hull FC star was a bricklayer before he joined the club’s old Under-20s system in 2012, and it’s the trade he’s gone back into after leaving the club at the end of last season.
The 31-year-old is currently building homes in Beverley. He gained his bricklaying qualification as a teenager and has now taken a job with national homebuilder Bellway Homes.

Enjoying the day-to-day life of a normal job, Shaul is at peace with his career in professional rugby league, with his name forever etched into history after scoring the winning try in Hull’s 2016 Challenge Cup final victory over Warrington Wolves. Doing his job and ready to watch the Black and Whites as a fan again, the former full-back has no dramas about stepping out of the limelight.
“There’s an expectation to go into coaching following retirement from any professional sport,” Shaul said. “For me, that wasn’t an option. I fell out of love with playing the game professionally, and I am now looking forward to seasons as a fan sat in the stands with my family. The only coaching I am happy doing is for my son’s under-eights team, where the main reason for taking part is fun and enjoyment.”
