Giants sign former Titans DC Shane Bowen will take Wink Martindale’s place.

The next defensive coordinator for the New York Giants has been named.

Multiple reports on Monday afternoon state that the Giants have reached an agreement to name Shane Bowen as their new defensive coordinator. For the previous three seasons, Bowen was the Tennessee Titans’ defensive coordinator.

With the Houston Texans, Bowen made his professional debut in 2016 as a defensive assistant. He left after two seasons to join the Titans as a linebackers coach, and in time for the 2021 campaign, he was elevated to the position of defensive coordinator.

After head coach Mike Vrabel was fired by the Titans for leading the team to a losing season for the second consecutive year, 37-year-old Bowen left the team. The Titans defense nevertheless placed in the middle of the pack in terms of yards per game and points per game allowed during the previous campaign. Since then, the Titans have brought in Brian Callahan to take Vrabel’s spot.

Don “Wink” Martindale will be replaced in New York by Bowen. Martindale spent two seasons with the Giants before parting ways with them last month. On his way out, he allegedly “cursed out” Giants head coach Brian Daboll after Daboll fired several assistants, including offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins, linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey.

The Giants finished 6-11 in their most recent season—their second under Daboll—and missed the postseason for the sixth time in the previous seven. As a defense, they tied for first place in turnovers committed, but they placed 27th in terms of yards allowed per game and 26th in terms of points allowed.

The Mississippi state auditor is still pursuing Brett Favre for the welfare funds scandal, demanding nearly $730,000.

Brett Favre is still being pursued by the state of Mississippi for welfare funds.

Brett Favre estimates he suffered 'thousands' of concussions

According to The Associated Press, Mississippi state auditor Shad White reiterated his demand in a fresh court document on Monday for the Hall of Fame quarterback to reimburse welfare funds that were purportedly misappropriated.

White insisted that Favre pay back the state $729,790, claiming it was interest from the initial $1.1 million he was given and then paid back.

It is alleged that Favre accepted $1.1 million in federal funds through the state of Mississippi for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF). He supposedly took those payments in return for speeches that he did not show up for starting in 2017. Additionally, while his daughter was a player at Southern Miss, Favre allegedly collaborated with a nonprofit organizer and former governor of Mississippi Phil Bryant to send $5 million in TANF funds for the construction of a new volleyball arena.

Favre was not placed under arrest and is not being prosecuted in this case. Federal prosecutors claimed that he is one of 47 “well-connected people” who diverted $77 million in funds from their intended beneficiaries in one of the nation’s poorest states.

In May 2020, Favre paid back $500,000 of his initial payment to Mississippi; the remaining $600,000 was repaid in October 2021. Since then, the state has pursued the interest. Favre has sued White for defamation, claiming he was unaware that the money utilized at Southern Miss was meant for welfare recipients. In that lawsuit, the claim submitted on Monday was a counterclaim.

In addition, Favre sued media figures Pat McAfee and Shannon Sharpe for defamation after they made remarks regarding the controversy. Favre withdrew his lawsuit against McAfee in May of last year, and a judge dismissed the lawsuit against Sharpe last fall.

Favre was an NFL player from 1991 to 2010. In 2016, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame after leading the Packers to victory in the Super Bowl. When it comes to passing yards and passing touchdowns, he ranks fourth in the league all-time. He played in the NFL for 20 seasons, earning just under $142 million.
