Get to know the Baltimore Orioles’ newest ace, Corbin Burnes
Burnes will provide a true No. 1 starter with playoff experience, something the Orioles have lacked for decades. Burnes was the 2021 National League Cy Young winner after leading the league in earned run average (2.43) and leading the Brewers to the playoffs that season. He did not have a great year last year but still managed to lead the league in WHIP (walks and hits/ innings pitched) while striking out over 200 batters for a third year in a row.
“(I’m) excited to be a part of the Baltimore organization, having won over 100 games last year. It’s a good young group, a lot of young guys that have come up and done well the last couple of years and young looking to kind of put my mark and, you know, help those guys to do whatever I can to help and get to a World Series,” Burnes said in a zoom call with media.
Burns gives the Orioles potentially one of the best rotations in baseball. He will be paired with last season’s ace, Kyle Bradish, to give the Orioles one of the best one-two punches in baseball, as both pitchers received Cy Young votes for the best pitchers in baseball. Burnes has been a full-time starter since 2020 and has been an All-Star-level pitcher since. He is a former fourth-round pick out of Saint Mary’s College of California and was ranked the Brewers No. 2 prospect in 2018.
“You know, our (pitching) staff is pretty young. Other than other than John Means these guys are at the forefront of their first few years in the major leagues,” Orioles general manager Mike Elias said. “So having the experience and I think somebody for the young guys to look up to and lean on and who can help pick up the slack is going to be enormous. I expect him to really, really help not just our team but the rest of the starters on the pitching staff.”
