Match report: Mason Mount makes his debut for Erik ten Hag’s squad as Manchester United defeats Daniel Farke’s Leeds United 2-0 in a preseason friendly in Norway thanks to goals in the second half from Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill.
Early in the game, the Chelsea player, who cost £60 million, nearly scored the first goal with an audacious long-range attempt. But Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill goals in the second half were necessary to give the Premier League team the victory.
Leeds did pose a threat on the break in the first half under new manager Daniel Farke thanks to Luis Sinisterra, and Hannibal had to mount a strong challenge to keep the Championship team at bay. Kristoffer Klaesson, on the other hand, made a nice save to deny the international from Tunisia.
At halftime, Ten Hag took Mount out, and among those to make way were Jadon Sancho, who was used as a striker, Lisandro Martinez, and captain Raphael Varane. It could be argued that his young Manchester United team got better as the match progressed.
The game-winning goal came from a skillful threading of Emeran by Norwegian midfielder Isak Hansen-Aaroen down the right channel. The 20-year-old French forward opened up his body and fired a left-footed shot past Dani van den Heuvel in the Leeds goal.
After Farke substituted Patrick Bamford during halftime, 17-year-old Archie Gray narrowly missed an equalizer with a long-range attempt that struck the sidenetting. Only when Joe Gelhardt was in a far better position could he blaze over.
Hugill was in space near the penalty spot when Emeran’s angled pass into the box found him, and the young forward scored the game’s first goal to highlight Manchester United’s dominance. The teenage player finished calmly. Ten Hag is having a good preseason start.

On July 19, Manchester United takes on Lyon at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, with a 2 p.m. kickoff. Three days later, they embark on a four-game tour of the USA.
Leeds’ next game, on July 22, kickoff at 4 p.m., is at Rotherham’s New York Stadium against Monaco, another Ligue 1 team.
