Tigers place Kerry Carpenter on IL; 2 players coming up from Toledo
DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers have placed outfielder Kerry Carpenter on the 10-day injured list after he crashed into the wall while making a catch on Thursday.
Carpenter was diagnosed with a mild AC joint sprain, and the hope is that he won’t miss a lengthy period of time.
To fill Carpenter’s spot, the Tigers selected the contract of infielder Andy Ibañez from Triple-A Toledo.
To create a spot for Ibañez on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Matt Manning was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Additionally, shortstop Zack Short was selected as the 27th man for Saturday’s doubleheader against the Baltimore Orioles. Short will start Game 1 of the day-night doubleheader at shortstop.
Carpenter, 25, has been one of the Tigers’ only sources of power during the first month of the season. In 20 games, he has a team-high five doubles and is tied with Nick Maton for the team lead with four homers. He’s hitting .217 with a .744 OPS (109 OPS+).
“We love him in the middle of order, and especially against right-handed pitching. He can do a lot of things,” said Tigers manager A.J. Hinch. “But it is what it is. When you have a collision with the wall, the wall wins.”
Ibañez, 30, was claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers last November. He was later waived by the Tigers but went unclaimed and remained in the organization.
Ibañez was in the mix for an Opening Day roster spot in Lakeland this spring, but he injured his hand while competing for Team Cuba in the World Baseball Classic and never got enough at-bats to state his case. But he’s hit well with Triple-A Toledo this month. He has a .297 average with five doubles and five homers in 79 plate appearances with the Mud Hens. He has a 1.027 OPS with 13 walks and 14 strikeouts.
