The Boston Red Sox signed Lucas Giolito to a two-year contract this offseason, but tests revealed he has a flexor strain and a partial UCL tear. Giolito may miss the entire season.
10:40 a.m. ET update: It seems like Giolito’s injuries could finish his season, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. This indicates that the news surrounding Giolito is more “worst-case scenario” stuff.
Horrible news Lucas Giolito, a starter for the Boston Red Sox, may miss the 2024 season due to a partially torn UCL and a flexor strain, according to initial MRI results, league sources tell ESPN. Giolito, who inked a two-year contract with Boston, might require surgery to fix the damage to his right elbow.
Tuesday was a devastating day for the Boston Red Sox as manager Alex Cora announced that right-hander Lucas.

Manager Alex Cora delivered a devastating blow to the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday when he revealed that right-hander Lucas Giolito’s elbow issue, which he described as “concerning,” will probably force him to start the season on the disabled list.
Jen McCaffrey of “The Athletic” reports:

1) The Red Sox took very little action in the winter to address their dire need for pitching. The organization placed a lot of faith in Giolito to be the cornerstone of the rotation when they signed him and traded for Chris Sale. The rotation that is based on a house of cards becomes even more shaky if he is out for an extended period of time.
2) After the season, Giolito can opt out of his two-year contract. If he is out for a significant portion of this season, it may affect his decision to opt in or out over the next offseason.

3) Jordan Montgomery, a free agent, has been linked to the Red Sox during the summer. Maybe they will finally jump in and take the action they have been needing to take all summer because of this injury scenario.
Giolito finished the 2019 season as an All-Star. He is 61-62 with a 4.43 ERA in his career. He has participated in games with the Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Angels, and Chicago White Sox.

The Red Sox take on the Seattle Mariners on March 28 to begin the season. Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, Kutter Crawford, Tanner Houck, and Garrett Whitlock will probably start on Opening Day if Montgomery is not signed by the organization, however Josh Wincowski might play a role.
