The Toronto Blue Jays have formally announced their first round of roster cuts following two weeks of spring training. There are eleven players on the list, the most prominent being right-hand pitcher Chad Dallas, outfielder Alan Roden, infielder Damiano Palmegiani, and left-hand pitcher Adam Macko.
Following a fortnight of spring training, the Toronto Blue Jays have formally declared their initial round of roster reductions. In the Teoscar Hernández deal, Macko, the Jays Journal’s No. 9 prospect, was acquired from the Seattle Mariners and went on to have a successful minor level season in 2023. Macko had a stellar strikeout rate of 11.1 batters per nine innings, a 5.-5 record, a 4.81 ERA, and a 1.35 WHIP in 20 starts with the Jays High-A club Vancouver Canadians. Although he wasn’t expected to contend for a starting position in the major league roster, his option to Triple-A Buffalo means that he might open the 2024 season at a higher minor league level than anticipated.
Palmegiani’s breakthrough season the previous year, which he split between Triple-A Buffalo and Double-A New Hampshire, made the Jays take notice of him. Along with a good 93 RBI and 33 doubles, he set career highs overall.255 average,.842 OPS, 23 home runs, and 70 runs scored in 128 games. He performed admirably in the Arizona Fall League, extending his stellar play, and entered 2024 with a slim chance of making the squad as a potential bench player.
However, Palmegiani didn’t have much of an opportunity to start the season with the major league club because of the signing of utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa this offseason and the fact that players like Davis Schneider and Ernie Clement were ahead of him in the depth chart. The Jays found it simple to select him as one of the early cuts given that he was 0-fer in his 11 spring plate appearances with 6 strikeouts.
For Dallas, the 2023 MLB Draft’s fourth-round selection had a fantastic season in 2023, pitching to a 9-3 record with a 3.65 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 144 strikeouts in just 123.1 innings of work over 23 starts. Dallas performed exceptionally well at both levels and was promoted from High-A to Double-A in the process. Even though Dallas struggled this spring, giving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits in just 4.1 innings of work, he still showed off his ability to strike out hitters with 7 punchouts.
As one of the Jays’ starting pitching depth possibilities in Buffalo, he will probably open 2024. There, he can continue honing his velocity to complement his excellent slider. When he does, it’s possible that he’ll join the majors earlier than anticipated.
The remaining players’ primary objective going forward for their careers is to gain promotions along the way, therefore they will join the aforementioned four in continuing their spring training work in the minors in anticipation of the upcoming season.
