Given that scouts were closely monitoring the Newcastle United defender’s play earlier this week, Chelsea is prepared to make large purchases.

Chelsea scouts were keeping a very close eye on the performance of Newcastle United defender Sven Botman earlier this week.

That is according to well-respected journalist Simon Phillips.

Chelsea beat Newcastle United 3-2 on Monday night in a Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.

Apparently, there were some very intrigued watchers in the stands.

Simon Phillips claims on his Substack today that Chelsea scouts and directors were ‘very closely watching’ Newcastle star Sven Botman during the league meeting a couple of days ago.

This comes straight after speculation that the Blues may be interested in signing the 24-year-old centre-back.

Phillips reported via Substack earlier in March that Botman was one of the names given to him as potential defensive targets for Chelsea this summer.

There’s no mention on how much it would cost any club to sign Botman from Newcastle. However, his reputation has generally soared at St James’ Park since his transfer to the Toon in a £35 million deal (Sky Sports) from Lille in 2022.

If Chelsea decided to judge Botman solely off his performance two days ago against them, we don’t think there’s any chance of him ending up at Stamford Bridge.

It was a real off-day for the Dutch centre-half in west London, but he’s got a CV behind him that proves the Newcastle colossus is usually very impressive in the Premier League. In particular, he was one of the division’s standout central defenders last season.

Our guess is Botman will want to forget Monday in a hurry. His individual display earned him a dreadful 4/10 match rating from Newcastle-based newspaper The Chronicle.
