Isaac Hayden has quipped that he never previously got the chance to play at the Stadium of Light because Sunderland were ‘always a bit far away’ from Newcastle United.
Hayden, who is currently on loan at QPR, made his first ever appearance against the Black Cats in Saturday’s goalless draw on Wearside. Hayden may be wearing blue and white rather than black and white these days, but the midfielder could not resist a couple of cheeky digs when asked if there had been an extra edge to the game.
“I’ve never played here,” he told club media. “They were always a bit far away from Newcastle to be honest in terms of league so I never got to play here. It’s a good stadium. To be fair, they packed it out today, which they don’t always do.”
Hayden has made nine appearances for QPR since joining the Championship strugglers on a temporary deal in the mid-season window and helped the Londoners move out of the relegation zone in that time.
“It’s been a big couple of weeks for us,” the 28-year-old added. “We have played a lot of the bigger teams if you want to call them that in the league. We have got good results. Going into the international break, it was crucial that we got something from today’s game.
“Obviously, we wanted to win it but we come off the back of Middlesbrough last week, which was a poor performance overall, and today was better. Not at our 100% flowing best, but away from home, it’s crucial not to concede and, also, to come away with something.”
