“He had really good training.”Harry Maguire expresses his admiration for the £50 million Arsenal star.

Harry Maguire dropped as Manchester United captain | The IndependentManchester United defender Harry Maguire is among the certainties to be on the plane to Germany for Euro 2024 this summer.

Maguire has kept patient at Old Trafford despite not always being first choice. Now back in favour to some extent, the experienced defender is a key part of Erik ten Hag’s squad.

For England, Maguire’s position has never been in question. Gareth Southgate has remained loyal to the Sheffield-born star and it’s likely we’ll see him start in the Euros.

Of course, Maguire’s situation in defence differs to that of Arsenal star, Ben White. Much has been made of White’s lack of selection for this week’s friendlies with Brazil and Spain.

However, rather than suggest there’s something untoward when it comes to White’s omission, Maguire has actually spoken highly of the £50m man.

Speaking to The Times about a range of subjects football and England related, Maguire admitted he wasn’t sure why White wasn’t wanting to be involved, and admitted when he has seen him, he’s been impressed.

“Ben’s an excellent footballer. He trained really well [at the World Cup before heading home early] but I honestly don’t know the ins and outs of why he’s not wanting to be in the squad at the moment. All I do know is that playing for your country is the greatest honour a footballer can get. When I was a young boy I dreamt of playing for my country. Every opportunity I get I will take. Playing for my country means absolutely everything to me,” Maguire said.

England must find a way to resolve this

It really is a massive shame that White isn’t wanting to be involved. We’ve all seen the stories of the potential reasons why but it just leaves a sour taste really.

At a time when England are hardly flush with quality at centre-back, not having the Arsenal man available is a tough one to take.

Sure, there are enough right-backs for England to absorb the loss there. But in terms of playing maybe three at the back or just using White at centre-half, it’s a bit of a stinker him not being available.

Going forward, this has to be something that both White and England’s management team work to resolve. And if they can, then that’s only going to benefit both the defender and the Three Lions.
