ESPN reports that West Ham’s top target will “almost certainly” move in the summer and would be “open” to going back to England.

West Ham target Albert Gudmundsson will “almost certainly” move in the summer and would be “open” to returning to England, according to ESPN.

The outlet reported on their website (25 March) that there are “a number” of Premier League clubs interested in a move or the 26-year-old, and after he spent time with Arsenal as a youth a source claims he would be willing to head back to the UK.

After West Ham were reported to have had a bid rejected for the Genoa forward midseason [Gianluca Di Marzio, 10 January], the club are thought to still be strongly involved in the hunt for his services along with Tottenham [TuttoMercatoWeb, 25 March].

ESPN report that one source now believes a summer transfer is practically guaranteed, with his asking price set to be between £15m-£20million.

Door open for West Ham to land ex-Arsenal youth forward?

Just as the indications are that the Irons will have a shot at signing the Icelandic international his various other suitors also will, with the likes of Juventus and Inter interested in Italy.

Perhaps the fact that West Ham made an attempt to bring him in during the January window will show a certain commitment, while the potential lack of competition at the London Stadium might also be attractive.

Michail Antonio remains the nominal first-choice striker when fit, but injury and form issues have seen him only contribute three goals this season and he has regularly been linked with a departure.David Moyes saw fit to prioritise a loan move for Kalvin Phillips in January despite a lack of attacking options so recruitment in forward areas looks set to be central to the summer window.

The last time the Irons signed a high-profile goal scorer from Serie A Gianluca Scamacca’s time in East London only lasted a year and the club is still needing to fill the gap left behind

A move for Gudmundsson sounds possible but if it does get done he will need to stick around longer than the Italian international did.
