Everton was in advanced negotiations to sign Mohammed Kudus; the true cause of their downfall was disclosed

Everton believe they would have sealed a deal for now-West Ham star Mohammed Kudus if their finances were healthy, sources have told Football Insider.

The Merseyside giants were in advanced talks with Ajax to sign the Ghana international in August 2022 but the move collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Everton also came close in January 2023 but did not have the funds to get the deals over the finish line.

The financial situation has since deteriorated at Goodison Park – with a points deduction and a takeover saga destabilising the club.

Everton close to signing Mohammed Kudus before collapse

The Merseysiders were first to the negotiating table for Kudus following his breakthrough at Ajax.

Man United, Chelsea and Brighton also showed an interest in the attacker – but it was West Ham who swooped last summer (2023) to seal a £38million deal

According to Transfermarkt, the Ghana international’s value has already grown to almost £43million.

He has managed 11 goals and four assists in 34 total appearances for West Ham so far in the 2023-24 campaign.

The 23-year-old is under contract at the London Stadium until June 2028 with the option for a further year.

Everton sit 16th in the Premier League and are in danger of receiving a further points deduction this season.

Sean Dyche’s side are four points above the drop zone with 10 games left to play in the 2023-24 campaign.
