Joe Cole suggested that there are only a handful of players who would have been able to do what he saw one Tottenham Hotspur star do on Tuesday night on international duty.
A number of Spurs players have been so impressive so far this season. Of course, Ange Postecoglou‘s men led the way in the opening weeks of the Premier League campaign.
Guglielmo Vicario has been a revelation in goal. Meanwhile, Micky van de Ven is clearly vital to Tottenham’s fortunes defensively. And Heung-min Son has been outstanding since being given the captaincy.
But another standout performer has been James Maddison. The 27-year-old has proved to be an inspired £40 million signing for Tottenham following Leicester City’s relegation last season.
Maddison has gone on to score four goals and contributed eight assists in the Premier League for Spurs. And many were saying that Maddison was the player of the season in the opening months of the campaign.
Joe Cole amazed by James Maddison after England draw
He certainly did his chances of securing a spot at Euro 2024 no harm at all by setting up the equaliser for Jude Bellingham on Tuesday as England drew with Belgium.
It was a perfectly-weighted lay-off into Bellingham’s path when he was surrounded by a number of defenders. And speaking to Channel 4, Joe Cole insisted that few could have produced the pass from Maddison.

“This is why I am a big fan of getting the technicians on the pitch. There is probably only four or five players in the country that can produce a pass like this which Maddison has done. The ball has dropped to him and the awareness and lifting it with the outside of your boot! And you wouldn’t want anyone else there but Jude Bellingham,” he said.
“It started from long ball but how do you score goals? It’s always with quality, ability and a little bit of magic. And we have two absolute magicians there.”
Tottenham need midfielder at his best again
Maddison’s form for Tottenham has been a little more underwhelming since he returned from injury. But Postecoglou will hope that he is getting closer and closer to the peak of his powers.
Obviously, Spurs now face a battle to qualify for the Champions League next year. And thus, they need Maddison to shine in the coming weeks.
With the amount of attacking quality Tottenham have, it could make a massive difference if they have Maddison pulling the strings again.
