Martin Keown struggled to understand why Everton were not awarded a penalty in their 2-1 loss to Bournemouth at the Vitality on Saturday.
Seamus Coleman’s late own goal meant the Cherries took all three points on the south coast. However, Sean Dyche was left ruing a decision that led to his side not being awarded a penalty in the second half while the game was 0-0.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin was clearly brought down by Bournemouth’s Tyler Adams in the box but referee Samuel Barrott waved away any protests.
- After showing the incident on Match of the Day, ex-Everton and Arsenal defender Keown was furious with the decision.
“Unbelieve decision. I cannot believe it, really. I mean, that’s ridiculous,” said Keown in reaction to the footage being shown on Match of the Day on Saturday night (30 March).
Everton penalty controversy v Bournemouth can be costly in Premier League
It was definitely a penalty.
As Stephen Warnock explained just before Keown shared his opinion on the incident, there was no need for Calvert-Lewin to go down in that situation unless he was fouled.
He wasn’t booked for simulation and while we know that not every bit of contact is a foul, it’s very obvious that Adams made enough contact with Calvert-Lewin to stop him in his tracks and bring him to the ground.
Everton really didn’t need that rotten piece of luck to occur on Saturday.
While they can be thankful that Tottenham came from behind to win against Luton, a second points deduction looms with a decision set to be made in the coming days.
Everton’s Premier League status is starting to hand by a thread and awful refereeing decisions like that one simply are not going to help the Blues avoid dropping into the second tier for the first time since 1950/51.
