Sad News: Sanction on Everton for breaching profit and sustainability rules. Everton to appeal with immediate effects

Everton are expected to appeal their latest points deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules, according to Alan Myers.

The Sky Sports journalist reported via Twitter on 8 April that the club are in line to again push back against the sanction, after being stripped of two points and dropping to 16th in the table.

The Toffees previously appealed their 10 point deduction earlier this season and had the punishment reduced to six.

Myers wrote: “Everton have been deducted a further two points as a result of a breach of the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules, the club is expected to appeal the decision. Everton will drop one place in the table to 16th, on 27 points.”

Everton to push back against punishment once more

This punishment isn’t as bad as it might have been considering how heavy the original sanction was, but it is still the last thing Sean Dyche needs as he tries to keep the club away from relegation.

Nottingham Forest also decided to appeal their four-point deduction which itself appeared somewhat lenient against the situation at Goodison Park.

The double jeopardy argument had been expected to reduce whatever Everton were hit with this time down significantly, so if there has been a two-thirds drop it would mean it was a starting point of six.

There had been some predictions that a points deduction might be avoided altogether this time, but that seemingly became more remote after the club’s accounts showed losses going in the wrong direction and potentially indicated a key mitigation argument had been lost

The scruffy 1-0 win over Burnley at the weekend has become all the more crucial now that it has effectively only benefited the club by a point, pending the appeal, with the pressure still very much on.

However, the Toffees do now at least know what situation they are dealing with as they approach what is shaping up to be a third-straight fight for survival.
