Eric Dier has played against some of the very best players of all-time.
Indeed, during his time playing for England, Tottenham and Bayern Munich, Dier has had to play against some of the greatest the game has ever had to offer.
From Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to Mohamed Salah and Phil Foden, Dier has seen them all.
Speaking on the Official Bayern Munich Podcast, Dier has now been asked who the most difficult player he’s ever had to face is, and he gave a very intriguing answer.
Eric Dier’s toughest opponent
Dier has played against the best of the best, but according to the England international his toughest ever opponent was Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool.
“Which player was the hardest to defend against?” Dier was asked.
“Back when I was a defensive midfielder I played against Philippe Coutinho at Liverpool and I thought he was just amazing. I played against him once at Anfield and yeah he was amazing,” Dier said.
Philippe Coutinho was unplayable at Liverpool
Philippe Coutinho is often forgotten due to the fact Liverpool improved drastically after he left the club.
Indeed, the Reds used the Coutinho money to improve massively as they signed the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Alisson and Fabinho, but before that, the Brazilian was a special player for the Reds.
Coutinho was genuinely unplayable at times, and while he is far from being Liverpool’s best player of the Jurgen Klopp era, he may well be the most naturally gifted player the Reds have had in recent years.
Coutinho had so much to his game, and it’s a real shame that things didn’t work out for him after leaving Liverpool because once upon a time he was one of the very best footballers on the planet.
Dier’s comments here are a testament to Coutinho’s quality and how good he was at Liverpool.
