Everton: Andy Burnham takes a jab at the Premier League as a new Chelsea building occurs

Everton fan and Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham has fired a fresh jibe at the Premier League following new developments at Chelsea.

Reports emerged that Chelsea’s owners, sold two hotels on the Stamford Bridge site to another company they own to avoid breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules and a potential point deduction [Daily Mail, 13 April].

Sean Dyche’s side make the trip to Stamford Bridge on Monday (15 April) having recently been handed a second deduction of the season and Burnham has been quick to slam the Premier League’s inconsistent approach.

Writing on X on Saturday (13 April) he said: “Everton play Chelsea on Monday. I hope the referee will be more even-handed than the Premier League.”

Will Chelsea be handed deduction for a PSR breach after Everton punishment?

It does feel as though the Premier League have one rule for clubs at the bottom of the table and those fighting it out at the top of the league, such has been the inconsistency of their punishment this season.

The Toffees have been plunged straight back into the relegation battle at the bottom of the table because of matters off of the field, with Dyche and his side doing all that they physically can to drag Everton up the table.

If Chelsea have managed to dodge a deduction purely through the sale of these hotels, it does seem incredibly unfair as they have not managed to raise the money themselves to remain compliant with the Premier League’s rules.

Hopefully, the referee at Stamford Bridge on Monday night will be more even-handed as Burnham suggested. With the Blues’ current injury crisis, Dyche must fancy his chances of pulling away from the dropzone.
