The Toronto Maple Leafs Stanley Cup Playoff run began with a thud on Saturday following a one-sided 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on the road. Before the final whistle, a fan thousands of miles away showed off the embarrassment most of Leafs nation was feeling.

During the fifth inning of the Toronto Blue Jays matchup against the San Diego Padres, cameras caught a fan covering their Leafs sweater with a baseball shirt.

The Leafs and Bruins, both original six squads, have a long and storied history, including numerous meetings in the postseason. But recently, the matchup has leaned more heavily toward the Bruins side, with their home, TD Garden, becoming a house of horrors for the rival Leafs.

While Toronto has gone 6-7 at the building in the playoffs since 2013, it has played host to heartbreaking endings in each series so far.

In 2013, Patrice Bergeron stunned the Leafs with an OT winner in Game 7. Then, in 2018, Toronto dropped another deciding Game 7 at TD Garden, blowing a 4-3 lead after allowing four unanswered third-period goals. Likewise, in 2019, the Maple Leafs suffered a first-round exit for the second consecutive year, ending with another Game 7 loss in Boston, 5-1.

The Maple Leafs still have time to right the ship, but if Game 1 of their first-round series with the Bruins was any indication, they don’t look primed to break the streak this time around.
