In 21 games (89 plate appearances) at Triple-A, Smith hit .263/.337/.375 with two home runs and 11 RBIs a year after hitting .254/.326/.366 with 12 home runs and 46 RBI in 153 games (586 plate appearances) with the Washington Nationals.
The 28-year-old has largely underperformed since the Mets took him with the 11th pick in the 2013 draft, posting two above-average seasons (2019-20; 139 games) as he was forced to play the outfield with Pete Alonso at first base.
As Newsday’s Tim Healey pointed out, Smith’s new home, Fenway Park, was the place where Smith freaked out after a rat invaded the dugout during a Mets-Red Sox game in 2018.
“Bro. I’m from LA, bro. We don’t have rats,” Smith said. “When you see one, it’s time to move out of that place and time to buy a whole new place. I want to buy a whole new dugout.”
