Sheldon Keefe got fired as Maple Leafs head coach Thursday. And if you were of the mind that coaching is the problem in Leafland, it was a change that came far too late.
It would have made just as much sense to fire him a year ago, after the Leafs followed up their first playoff-series win in 19 years with a second-round faceplant against Florida. Keefe self-identified as a Kyle Dubas protégé from the day he took over for Mike Babcock in 2019. So it would have been logical to send Keefe packing along with the Pittsburgh-bound ex-GM last spring.
