Disappointing news as the Maple Leafs mutually part ways with yet another important player

One of the notable executives in the hockey mecca of the world is moving on.

According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, Toronto Marlies governor and senior vice president Laurence Gilman has mutually parted ways with the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Per LeBrun, the veteran hockey executive, whose contract expires this month, is expected to draw interest from other teams in the NHL.

Gilman was originally hired by the Maple Leafs in 2018, when then-general manager Kyle Dubas hired the Winnipeg native to serve as assistant GM with the Leafs, as well as to be the Marlies’ general manager. He held that role until 2021, when Dubas hired Ryan Hardy to become the new GM and director of hockey operations of both the AHL affiliate and the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL.

Gilman then stepped back from NHL duties after the 2021-22 season, when he was named governor and senior VP of hockey operations from the Marlies.

Gilman has served a variety of roles over his front office career. Before coming to Toronto, the 59-year-old was the director of hockey operations with the Arizona Coyotes from 1998 to 2001, before adjusting to the role of vice president of hockey operations and assistant general manager prior to the 2001-02 season. He was the GM for the Coyotes’ AHL affiliates in Utah and San Antonio from 2004 to 2007.

From 2008 to 2015, Gilman worked under Mike Gilles with the Vancouver Canucks, holding the titles of vice president of hockey operations and assistant general manager for seven seasons. He was also on the NHL’s expansion draft rules and regulations committee, helping design the rules for the Vegas Golden Knights’ expansion draft in 2017.
