Following surgery, Celtics center shared an emotional letter to the fans

Kristaps Porzingis took to social media on Thursday to thank Celtics fans for their support after he underwent surgery.

“Thanks for the support! Everything went smooth,” Boston’s center posted to X, formerly known as Twitter. “Now will take time to heal up and get ready to go again.”

Porzingis had a torn retinaculum and dislocated posterior tibialis tendon repaired, an injury he suffered in Game 2 of the NBA Finals. He missed Games 3 and 4, but overrode the Celtics’ medical staff and played in Game 5 en route to Boston’s championship win over the Dallas Mavericks.

The surgery will not only take Porzingis out of the 2024 Paris Olympics, but he’ll also miss at least the first month of the 2024-25 NBA season when the Celtics begin their defense of Banner 18. The Celtics revealed Porzingis will be sidelined for five-to-six months.

The timeline adds up to what president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said during a recent appearance on The Ringer’s Ryen Russillo’s podcast.

“We’re going to be different right out of the gate simply because we have guys like Kristaps after his surgery. We don’t know exactly when he’ll be back. But he’ll probably miss at least the very start of the season,” Stevens said. “That’ll be a great opportunity for us to do things (differently) and have to find different solutions and those types of things that come with it. And then we’ll just evaluate our team like we always do.”

The Celtics were forced to be without Porzingis for much of the playoffs after a calf injury kept him out of the entirety of the second and third rounds.

A silver lining for Boston is that the team knows what it has to do to win when Porzingis is out of the lineup. Plus, the Celtics have 11 players under contract for the 2024-25 NBA season, so much of their core will still be in tact.
