LEBRON JAMES ACCEPTS A NEW $104 MILLION, TWO-YEAR DEAL WITH THE LAKERS.

In a widely expected move, free agent superstar LeBron James is returning to the Los Angeles Lakers. However, the terms of his return are somewhat unexpected.

It was previously reported that the Lakers were willing to give James a three-year deal but the agreement is for two years and $104 million maximum contract according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojanrowski. Additionally, it includes a player option for 2025-26.

James’s agent Rich Paul said last week that his client is willing to take a pay cut in order to help the Lakers sign an “impact player.” However, with no such player apparently being available anymore, James opted to get the max deal.

Still, Wojnarowski adds that there have been discussions between the Lakers and James’ representatives about the player giving the LA team a slight discount regardless. The Lakers are facing the prospect of hitting the NBA’s punitive salary second apron, which would severely limit their flexibility in improving the roster. That could be avoided if James is willing to take $1 million less than he is entitled to.

Despite playing in his 21st NBA season, James delivered another impressive campaign in 2023-24. He played 71 regular-season games, most since 2017-18, while averaging 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 8.3 assists.
