Goalkeeper Simon Moore came through the door prior to the appointment of French boss Regis Le Bris, who has been given a mentoring role for young shot-stopper Anthony Patterson, despite the 24-year-old attracting Premier League interest.
On the matter of incomings, Sunderland are also close to striking a deal for former Preston North End midfielder Alan Browne, who is willing to lower his wages to join the club.

Sunderland have made just the one confirmed signing so far this season, however it is suggested that the Black Cats have the funds available to further add to their ranks and are in no danger of breaking financial fair play rules.
Speaking to Sunderland Echo, Speakman said: “I think our strategy and the way that we’ve approached running the club, we think we can out-compete those teams that constantly cycle into trouble.
“I can categorically say there is no financial pressure through any of the regulations or anything like that that would force us to sell a player.”
More good news as Sunderland look to keep key players
Sunderland’s battle to keep hold of their key talents was strengthened by Bellingham staying at the club, which may start a domino effect and persuade other star players such as Jack Clarke to stay despite Premier League interest.
Patterson’s situation also looks more positive after his role with Moore was explained.
On top of all this, Sunderland now clearly have no financial necessity in selling their key players, as they look to hold on to them for the 2024/25 Championship season.
The sooner that Sunderland get to confirming who will be committing their future to the club, the quicker they will be able to build their side around the likes of Bellingham and Clarke next season.
The financial security at the club could also be going further towards Championship experience coming through the door.
The signing of 29-year-old midfielder Browne is a step in the right direction for the Black Cats, but two or three experienced players should be demanded, now that it’s confirmed that Sunderland have money to part with when looking at their transfer targets.
