Newcastle United are in the market for a new centre-back this summer.
The Magpies need more defensive bodies through the door. Fabian Schar isn’t getting any younger, Sven Botman has had a long list of injury issues as of late, while Jamaal Lascelles may not be up to the standard required to play in a team pushing for the top four.
Luckily, the transfer window is open, and Newcastle have some options to explore on the market.
According to A Bola, Newcastle are currently favourites to sign an ‘incredible’ defender from Portugal.
Newcastle favourites to sign Antonio Silva
According to this report, Newcastle United are leading the race to sign Antonio Silva this summer.
The Portuguese defender is said to be valued at €60m (£50m), but it’s thought that a move at such a fee is unlikely after his underwhelming performances at Euro 2024.
Newcastle have been linked with Silva for some time now, with some suggestions that an offer has already gone in, and A Bola believe that Newcastle could now raise that offer.
Antonio Silva signing could be a masterstroke
Antonio Silva could be a fantastic signing for Newcastle.
The 22-year-old defender’s stock is at a low ebb at the moment, and that’s exactly the time to sign him.
Indeed, Silva’s stock may have dipped as of late, but he is still a Portugal international who has been tipped for big things, and with the right coaching, he could easily get back on the path to superstardom.
Silva’s main strengths lie in his physical gifts, he’s an incredibly strong player, and he’s very fast as well, clocking in a top speed of 20.19 mp/h last season, significantly higher than Sven Botman’s top speed of just 17.77 mp/h.
To put that into some context, that 2.32 mp/h gap is larger than the gap between the top speeds of Anthony Gordon and Dan Burn.
This could be a very clever signing from Newcastle, and it’s certainly one to keep an eye on.
