Further involvement likely for Leeds United “surprise packages” today v Monaco

Leeds United takes on Monaco this afternoon aiming to continue building under Daniel Farke before the start of the season.

The Whites are gearing up for their third outing of pre-season and their second in front of fans as they take on Monaco in York today.

it’s the second time in less than a year Leeds will have hosted the Ligue 1 outfit for a friendly, having done so shortly before Christmas in 2022.

Daniel Farke is still getting to grips with his Leeds squad, but there have been some names brought in from the cold that will be keen to continue impressing.

Here, we look at two surprise packages from early on in this pre-season that should feature today…

Ian Poveda

After two EFL loans in the last two seasons, Ian Poveda was someone not many expected to have much of a chance this season under Farke.

However, constant hard work in the gym over the summer and clearly some hard yards put in at Thorp Arch have suddenly given Poveda a new chance.

He has one year left on his deal and there’s a long way to go before he can earn himself a regular spot once more, but his performance against Man United and then goal against Barnsley helps his cause.

Leeds need a 10 in the transfer window, but they have someone who is likely to show some worth with better players around him in Poveda.

Jeremiah Mullen

The lack of depth means that these fringe players are going to get more of a nod, and that is emphasised by a manager more than willing to offer out minutes to those who deserve it.

At the heart of centre-back, Jeremiah Mullen is one that surely warrants more time in the lineup, especially considering the lack of depth we have.

Ethan Ampadu’s arrival will see him surely add to the midfield, meaning Leeds only have Charlie Cresswell as a senior right-footed centre-back.

Behind him is Mullen, who is a confident centre-back despite his age, and has demonstrated some quality in build-up despite a heart-in-mouth moment when Man United’s Mason Mount picked his pocked in Oslo.
